overview

The Broken Heart is a tragedy play by John Ford, first published in 1633.

The interwoven storylines of the characters is flavoured with themes of  ‘aristocratic code of stoicism’ stinted emotions, political ambition and alliance, jealousy, revenge, love, abuse, and death.

The final scene there is a dance before Calantha is to marry Ithocles, during which she receives news that; her friend Penthea has died of starvation, Orgilus has imprisoned Ithocles in a mechanical chair and killed him, and her father king Amyclas has died. Calantha refuses to let her grief stop the dance, she becomes queen of Sparta and sentences Orgilus for killing Ithocles. Calantha assigns Nearchus her successor, she then dies of a broken heart.
